PhonePe pursues aggressive growth strategy, eyes market expansion and profitability

PhonePe, one of India's largest fintech companies, is focused on growing and expanding into new markets. In its 2024 annual report, the company highlighted its strong position in India's digital payments space and its efforts to increase revenue and profitability. In the fiscal year 2023-24, PhonePe reported revenue of Rs 5,064 crore, a 74% increase from the previous year. The company also achieved a profit after tax of Rs 197 crore, excluding certain costs, compared to a loss of Rs 738 crore the year before. PhonePe's standalone payments business also improved, recording a profit of INR 710 crore, a significant turnaround from the previous year's loss. The company now has 53 crore registered users and 20 crore monthly active customers, processing over 770 crore transactions monthly, totaling INR 10.5 lakh crore in Total Payment Value. PhonePe is expanding its services to include mobile recharges, bill payments, money transfers, and travel bookings. Additionally, the company offers financial products such as mutual funds, gold SIPs, insurance, and personal loans. By focusing on operational efficiency and automation, PhonePe has reduced its customer service team by over 60% in the past five years, despite a 40-fold increase in transaction volume. Looking ahead, PhonePe aims to continue growing by expanding its product offerings, strengthening its merchant network, and maintaining financial discipline.
